Uptown Girls (2003) If you have ever seen the movie Uptown Girls starring Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning, than you will know the iconic scene where Brittany’s character Molly, uses a tea light shade as a hair accessory. She wakes up late for her birthday party, picks up what is essentially a mini lampshade, crushes it into a hair clip and is out the door. In my eyes, Molly is the epitome of cool. If you have seen the movie, you will also know the to-die-for, custom leather jacket worn in the Sheets of Egyptian Cotton music video. And the denim pinafore dress worn by Brittany. And the sunglasses Dakota’s character Ray dons with her plaid schoolgirl uniform. And of course, Molly’s shimmering, beaded birthday gown. The movie is brimming with funky outfits, especially Molly’s because she has a flair for dramatics.
The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003) In this movie, Lizzie goes on a school trip to Italy and meets a cute Italian who wants her to pose as his singing partner, because Lizzie looks identical to her. Lizzie agrees, and the Italian cutie takes her to a wacky designer’s showroom, Lizzie saunters down the runway in everything from an inflatable igloo dress to a dress made of fairy lights! Lizzie finally takes control of the situation and ends up designing the best dress/pants combo known to man.
A Cinderella Story (2004) In this timeless film, Hilary Duff’s character Sam wears the most exquisite white dress and intricate mask to a Halloween dance, outshining every other girl in the room. She looked like a literal princess angel! Her crush falls head over heels for her, although he does not even see her entire face because of the spectacular mask! That’s true love. When she is not dancing the night away with the boy of her dreams, Sam works at her evil stepmother’s diner, where she wears all black with pink roller-skates, which deserve an honorable mention for being such a dreamy look.
Life Size (2000)In this Disney classic, Lindsay Lohan’s character Casey accidentally casts a spell on her Eve doll, making her come to life. Eve, played by the admirable Tyra Banks, wears some magical outfits. The ultimate Eve look is an orange sweater complete with a shaggy, fringe-like trim paired with an leopard print orange crop top and matching mini skirt. All orange is a major look, especially when there is a shaggy knit involved. Can it get any more 2000’s?!
New York Minute (2004)
This movie, starring Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen as Jane and Roxy Ryan, finds the two polar opposite sisters on a trip to New York in order for Jane to give an important speech with the intention of winning a scholarship and Roxy to attend her favorite band’s music video shoot. Through a series of misadventures, the sisters find themselves in hotel bathrobes, followed by I Love NY tees until they stumble upon a beauty parlor like no other. The sisters leave the salon with gorgeous hair and insane looks. One is wearing a turquoise faux snakeskin skirt suit and the other is wearing beautiful maroon velvet blazer and cropped trouser combo.
