The Sun Is Rising

By Emma Ricci-De Lucca

In this project, I wanted to capture a series of photographs that depict the story of a person who does not fit in and, as a result, feels alone in the world. As the subject attempts to reach out to people, she is continuously rejected. Feeling helpless and in pain, she struggles to cope with her loneliness. However, just as she is about to give up hope, someone befriends her and she realizes that “the night can only last for so long”, and that she should “look beyond the clouds”, because the sun is finally rising.

The series of pictures are accompanied by three songs: “Is Anybody Out There?” by K’naan featuring Nelly Furtado, “Who You Are” by Jessie J, and “The Sun Is Rising” by Britt Nicole. These lyrics incorporated speak to the mood and theme of the story of each picture. Displayed as an accordion book, the exhibition communicates the continual progression of the story.

I hope that the audience is able to make a connection to the subject and relate to her as well. The images are intended to remind the audience that everyone struggles and goes through tough times and the important thing to remember is that we are not alone. We should accept each other and ourselves in order to be truly happy.
