Trek to Astruc Haiti
By Sindu Soundararajan
“Education is a basic human right. Yet those who need education the most- children living in poverty are the least likely to attend and complete school.”
BuildOn is an organization that works to break the cycles of poverty by creating self-sustainable schools within villages in developing countries. This past March, I was able to travel with 15 students and a few teachers to a village called Astruc in Haiti. After fundraising for 6 months, our group of students worked with members of the community to begin the process of building a primary school. By spending around 4 hours everyday on the worksite, attending various daily cultural workshops, and living with my incredibly kind host family, I was able to learn so much about the culture and people of Astruc. I was only able to document a few of the countless unforgettable experiences I had in Astruc, but the following images I took can show a glimpse of the people, animals, and setting of the village.
