Interview

Art Focused Questions:

What's your favorite medium to create with?

Probably charcoal or pencil.

Are there any mediums you find yourself experimenting with more than others?

I am terrible at watercolor, but I always end up going back to it

What was it like working with watercolor?

Usually, it is full of complaining and getting annoyed, but I secretly love the way watercolor works.

What other art styles are you interested in?

I think that I should get better at photography. I was super into it my freshman year and a part of my sophomore year, but stopped keeping up with it.

What was your introduction to photography?

My dad used to lend me his camera when I was little so I could take photos of random things like grass and flowers.

From where do you derive inspiration? How does that affect your artwork?

I really just draw whatever comes to mind. I don't really have many artists in my family or people that I take much inspiration from. I used to watch a lot of artists on youtube when I was younger so that might be an influence.

What is your sustained investigation or thematic exploration?

I commonly focus on landscapes or still lives and eyes. I try to demonstrate stillness or the quiet through my art, instead of creating more chaos.

How do you see yourself through your art? Do you see yourself?

I think that my art is what you would expect for it to be when you look at me. Although I know I could create more abstract art, or art speaking of the sadder or deeper moments in life, I think that, for me, it's more important to demonstrate the quiet times.

How do you plan to continue your art and incorporate it into your life?

I know that art will always be there as something for me to do whenever an idea comes to me, and with that being said, I really don't have any plans to bring art into college or any jobs in my future. I know that if I made art my life, I would hate it.

What advice do you have for students who want to be involved artistically, but are unsure if they can fit it into their schedules in and out of  school?

My schedule is always packed, literally 24/7. I work, go to practice, go to my second practice, do homework, etc. I understand how difficult it can be to find space to do art, but I really do believe that you don't need to do art all of the time to be an artist. I rarely draw outside of school, instead I just wait until it comes to me and usually only spend about 20 minutes at a time. That probably makes me a bad example, especially from an art teacher's point of view, but just drawing 20 minutes a week or every 2 weeks can help make you a better artist than the average person.
