Maviah Khan
Interviewed by Aruna Balasubramanian
What common themes do you use in your work?
Color and light. For every photo that I have ever taken and edited in my 4 years at Harriton, my main focus has always been how can I transform something simple into something interesting to look at. I always try to make my photos have a lot of vibrance and color so that I can easily represent my main themes.
How has quarantine affected your artwork in the past year?
Quarantine has surprisingly made my work even easier, as a lot of my work never had people in it. So being able to take photos where my setting is eerie and quiet is something I love to capture. All around, getting to locations and having that free time during the day to plan out where and what I want to photograph has given me a new side of ideas I never knew I had.
Did you take any art classes during quarantine? If so, what were they and what was your experience like?
No, I did not take any art classes other than just taking photos in my free time.
What has been the best part of your senior year?
The free time is honestly the best and worst thing about my senior year. I am able to do classes from wherever I want whether that be a different state or at a friends house. It also lets me basically make my own schedule as I can run errands during my classes for either myself or my mom or anyone else in my family.
Favorite high school memory?
I have a lot of favorite memories from Harriton but most of them I can not say because they are not "school appropriate" but one of the better memories that I had was during an away lacrosse game during my sophomore year. We were on our way to an away game and halfway to the game, our bus started to smoke and we broke down on the side of the ride. Now that I am typing this out, it sounds pretty bad but for some reason during the time, it was pretty funny and just was a once in a lifetime kind of experience that I know I will never have again.
What are your plans after high school?
I committed to Drexel University in April and my major is real estate management and development as I have always wanted to do something regarding real estate in my future. I have a co-op after 2 years at Drexel and currently it is way too early for me to know what I will do with it but I know that this is something I want to succeed in for my future.
What is the most recent movie you watched?
I have not watched many new movies lately but I have rewatched a lot of old ones that I have always loved. I am very big on directors rather than single movies as I love the Tarantino films and any of the Wes Anderson movies but I have recently been re-watching a lot of Martin Scoerces old films such as Shutter Island and GoodFellas.
Favorite place in the Philadelphia area?
I love going to the city itself but if I do not feel like going through all that traffic and trying to find parking then I love going to Manayunk. A lot to do and a lot to see and it is very close to my house.
Favorite type of music?
Rap/HipHop but it all just depends and varies on my mood that day as I can basically listen to any genre but country. I hate country.
Favorite social media?
Instagram by far. I use it for a lot of my news and I love being able to learn new things every day because of it.
