Double Consciousness

By: Sophia Abdumalik (12)

“Double Consciousness” draws on American sociologist and civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of the Black American. The subject, depicted screaming in agony, is pulled in opposite directions, illustrated with complementary colors of purple and yellow- representing polarization within. Exposed to external pressures of assimilation, concepts of civility and professionalism clash with one’s identity and culture, tied to a broader issue of what defines “good hair” in the Black community.
