Telecommunications

As a part of a personal project, I wanted to photograph something of historical significance representing unity. So, this summer I visited the Avala telecommunications tower in Belgrade, Serbia with old friends who live on different sides of the world. While the tower was a great place to reconnect, I also chose it for its cultural significance. Being one of the few towers constructed with three legs forming a tripod, it symbolizes the "tronožac" or tripod chair that is unique to Serbian culture. The original tower was also destroyed in 1999 by the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia but as reconstruction began in 2006 it was reopened by 2010. Today it is a significant landmark and frequently visited by both tourists and civilians.
