The Gaze

Their attentive expression captured my eye, but ironically, something else in the distance captured theirs. I experimented with reflections similar to and inspired by Faizal Westcott's distinct and abstract style of photography. This can be seen with the street lamp reflecting off of the window and framing their gaze and the trees that shield the car's interior. I edited in black and white to center the gaze as the focal point. The image's composition and the subject's body language allows us to make inferences about who they are; however, it is all up to interpretation. I wanted to explore how people of different backgrounds may judge and view this person. Just like how identity based lens and gazes allow us to asses situations from different perspectives, a photo's composition and the context it provides allows viewers to perceive this person in different ways.
