Veterans on Beach

My intention for this image was to create focal points using negative space and a natural environment to help contextualize a veteran subject. On my trip to Cape May, I found out about its World War I history and, on its beach, noticed the SS Atlantus concrete shipwreck. Just as I was leaving, a couple, wearing a veteran jacket and a USA hat, sat on rocks while looking at the shipwreck and conversing. When I filtered the images I took that day, I found myself gravitating towards the couple. The lack of information in the sky helped convey the idea of negative space that I tried to capture, and the man's head and the ship slightly occupying that space helped create two distinct focal points. The man’s eye-line aligned with the horizon and created a leading line to the ship which compositionally helped convey their connection with the military and Cape May’s historic past.
